Emporio, the biggest village on the island, is a real hidden gem: a beautiful old settlement, perhaps slightly run down, but very original, it offers some restaurants and a nice traditional café, as well as the chance to visit Goulas Castle and some churches. The atmosphere of the village even inspired Jean-Paul Sartre, who set an act of his play Les Mouches (The Flies) in Emporio, after a visit with his partner, Simone de Beauvoir.
