An absolute must-see when in the area, the island of Asinara was closed to the public for over 100 years and offers a glimpse of Sardinia as it was in the past. In the 1800s it was converted to a huge prison complex, the strictest and at the same time safest place in Italy. Today there are organized boat tours to the island and it’s worth to book one of the Jeeps with a guide that drives you around the island. On Asinara you will also a sea-tortoise rescue center and the white Asinara donkeys and the ruins of an old Spanish church. The beaches, here, are wild and beautiful, but as there are no hotels on the island, if you want to stay ere you should look for rooms to let.
