Imposing Mount Vesuvio is the symbol of Naples: if you want to see it up close, there are two ways to visit the crater. From the south side you can drive up to a certain point, leave the car in a paid parking lot and take one of the special all-terrain busses that take you all the way up to the soft ash road. From there, a lovely path among Scotch brooms with amazing views takes you tot the crater in about 15 minutes. The other way to reach it is from the north side: you can drive up to a parking lot and then walk for about 35 minutes to reach the summit. No matter which way you decide to take, bring comfy shoes and expect lots of dust.
