Ercolano might not be as famous as Pompeii, but is definitely worth a visit while you are in the area if you really want to understand what happened when Mount Vesuvio erupted in AD 79. Most of the ancient city still has to be discovered, but what has already been brought to light is incredible. Both Ercolano and Pompeii are stops on the Circumvesuviana train, which makes it particularly easy to visit.
