The rather large town of Ierapetra is mostly known for being the starting point of the boat excursions to Chrissi island, but it’s also a very pleasant spot with a relaxed atmosphere and a great selection of restaurants by the sea. The backstreets, too, are a nice place for a walk and great if you are looking to do some shopping. Near the water, the ancient Venetian castle walls are very well kept and impressive. The long beach by Ierapetra, party sandy and partly pebbled, is very well organized with chairs and umbrellas and facilities of all kinds. The waters are generally calm, which mean that this is a great place to spend the day if you are traveling with children.
